Not Your Average Mushroom Brand

Skillz Branding. Illustration Print

The Mushroom Patch is what happens when a grunge, unfiltered, nostalgic misfit who’s been living on the Ocean City boardwalk decides to grow mushrooms in a shack—and somehow ends up selling mushroom products to soccer moms at the farmers market. That’s Michael. He grows a variety of gourmet mushrooms—like lion’s mane, oyster, and shiitake—and sells them at local farmers markets, where curious foodies and health-conscious shoppers can’t get enough.

He originally joked about writing the company name on a cardboard sign with a Sharpie. Obviously, that wouldn’t attract the right audience—but it got me thinking. Everyone loves a handmade touch—it feels real, personal, and intentional. So I leaned into a DIY, zine-style aesthetic that echoed Michael’s vibe: raw, a little gritty, and totally homegrown.

I combined simple design elements with hand-drawn illustrations to create an identity that felt like it came straight from a farmers market table, with just the right amount of weird. The final brand includes packaging, recipe postcards, a branded van, and to-go bags—all designed to showcase The Mushroom Patch’s rustic charm, rebellious spirit, and the unique personality behind it all.
